After spending 2 weeks in the capture boma, the buffalo were tested by a local Vet for any diseases. It was quick and professional and for the first time, I was able to touch a buffalo confidently! We have been feeding them Teff – a locally grown grass (Eragrostis) whilst we await the results, the buyer to sign the papers and the widlife capture team to set a date for their transportation.
For those of you who were wondering, disease-free buffalo are relatively rare in South Africa as buffalo are very susceptible to contracting diseases such as Corridor disease, Bovine Tuberculosis, Foot-and-Mouth disease and Contagious Abortion. As a consequence, disease-free buffalo are much sought after and have become extremely expensive.
